Reduce Pollutants with Air Purifier

Cleaning, as a preventative measure, can prove to be the most effective strategy against all this pollution. We should keep moist surfaces or standing water to a minimum in the kitchen. Floors and hard surfaces should be vacuumed, wiped, dusted, or mopped frequently. Bedding and linens should be washed in very hot water, which is likely to destroy some of the dust mites. Pillows, especially those being used by children, should be replaced annually if these cannot be laundered. Wood or tile floors should be installed; these shelter less mites and dust than carpets and rugs.

Dust and mildew can get collected in centralized heating and air conditioning, fans, air purifiers, or dehumidifiers and other such air circulation devices, if these are not properly maintained. The filters, ducts, or screens of these appliances have to be replaced or cleaned regularly. All the ventilating outlets to the house, including window screens, should be clean.

Plenty of preventative and corrective measures have to be taken, as indoor air is five to ten times as polluted as outdoor air. Even the houseplants recycle carbon dioxide into oxygen, and help to keep air clean.

For reducing pollutants in indoor air, the three strategies, in the order of effectiveness, are source control, ventilation, and air cleaning.

Source control can help to reduce emissions of or to eliminate individual sources of pollutants. Some sources can be sealed or enclosed, like those that contain asbestos; making some adjustments can decrease the amount of emissions for others, including combustion appliances. However, it is not possible to identify all pollutant sources and practically eliminate or reduce these.

Ventilation takes place through windows and doors, or on account of exhaust fans, or, due to the use of mechanical ventilation systems, with or without heat recovery ventilators. However, ventilation can be used to reduce airborne pollutants only to a certain extent. There can be significant costs for heating or cooling incoming air, and outdoor air itself may contain undesirable levels of pollutants.

Air cleaning can be done in addition to source control and ventilation. However, adequate air quality cannot be assured through the use of air cleaning devices alone, especially when there are significant sources present and there is inadequate ventilation.
